Communications Officer – Dispatcher LifeCare Medical Transports, Inc. – Fredericksburg, VA General Description: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls. Must be able to provide a high level of customer service to all customers; internal and external. Must be able to work comfortably in a high volume, high stress environment. Must be able to accurately type 40 wpm. Shifts: LifeCare is a 24-hour operation, and the shifts and/or schedule will vary dependent upon the needs of the organization; must be available for days, evenings and overnights. Essential Functions: • Receives and responds to emergency and non-emergency calls through radio system and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. • Processes and evaluates information received, prioritizes calls and dispatches required units appropriately. • Utilizes technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fax machines and other communication equipment. • Provides exceptional customer service at all times to all crews and callers. • Creates and maintains automated or manual logs for call volume and unit activity. • Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the performance of assigned shifts. • Keeps informaed of departmental regulations, policies and procedures. • Ensures all crews receive breaks and documents accordingly. • Maintain a consistent knowledge of available units in all locations. • Communicate effectively with station supervisors to provide information on crews, schedule, etc. • Ensures all calls are handled in a timely fashion and all discrepancies are reported to the appropriate department or member of management. • Other duties as assigned. Skills, Abilities & Knowledge • Extensive knowledge of EMS industry • Excellent oral and written communication skills to include; • *Speaks clearly over the telephone and radio *Ability to use computer proficiently *Types a minimum of 40 words per minute accurately. *Able to communicate verbally with co-workers, supervisors and executive Management. • Ability to make fast and accurate decision. • Ability to work in a high stress environment • Flexible with shift/schedule assignments • Ability to adapt, handle complex situations, and prioritize projects/assignments in a timely manner • Ability to multi-task, observe situations analytically and objectively while relaying details accurately • Skills in reading and interpreting mapping system and to determine location of facilities, units and/or crews. • Ability to work alone and successfully work a shift without immediate assistance or supervision License/Certifications Required and Special Conditions • Virginia EMT-B Certification (Must be obtained with 6 months of employment or be involved in an established EMT-B course). • EVOC – Must be obtained within 30 days of employment • HealthCare Provider CPR • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800b Certifications • Hazmat Certification • Virginia Driver’s License with no negative points on driving record • US citizen or legal alien • No felony convictions within the last 5 years • Minimum of high school diploma
